"It was never buried to begin with, just hiding beneath a thick layer of mud. The aftermath of a summer storm. It was proof of heat breaking, cracking open and revealing itself as a new species. They always come back. Eventually, the hair you cut short becomes long without meticulous care. I drained the pond and scooped out what was left at the bottom. Bones. Sometimes peace. Even in the afterlife, the clamming up of my own voice is evidence.

 I care too much. "
